Who’s got your back in times of need?
CHAMP’s #GotMySix 2018 campaign invites you to give a shout-out to those who’ve “got your six” in all areas of your life. Check out CHAMP’s Human Performance Resource Center (HPRC) on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram @HPRConline.
Many times it’s not just one person who’s “got your six.” It might be your entire community, school, base, place of worship, or even your pet(s). Whoever your social supports are, it’s important to identify and recognize them for helping you perform at your best.
From November 15 through December 31, use the #GotMySix hashtag to highlight anyone who offers you social support. If you’re deployed or TDY, you might not be able to spend the holidays with your family and friends. But despite the distance, you can still share your gratitude far and wide.
Why it matters
A strong support system can make a big difference in your pursuit of physical, mental, nutritional, and relationship fitness goals. By building and recognizing the network of people who’ve got your back, you can endure tough times, overcome challenges, and boost resilience.
Many people with strong social supports report benefits that include:
- More mental toughness and a better ability to cope well with stress
- Protection against the effects of trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
- A buffer against loneliness and depression
- Greater ease in forming and maintaining healthy behaviors and routines
Downrange, your battle buddies and unit members are often the ones willing to put themselves in harm’s way to protect you. At home, this kind of support comes in many forms: the friend who encourages you to exercise, the supervisor who invests in your professional development, your spouse or partner who helps run your errands, or the neighbor who mows your grass when you’re TDY.
