Heatstroke occurs when your body overheats, usually as a result of prolonged exposure to or physical exertion in high temperatures. The good news is that there are ways to prevent heatstroke and stay safe.
Heatstroke often occurs when your body overheats during heavy work, training, or exercise in the heat. Try these tips to stay safe. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, especially during the hot summer months. Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, especially when overly fatigued or overly exerted. Avoid heat mixed with high humidity. Limit alcohol, caffeine, and carbonated drinks that dehydrate the body. If you’re experiencing headache, dizziness, disorientation, muscle cramps, nausea, or vomiting, get out of the heat quickly and into the shade or a cool place. Apply cool towels to your skin or take a cool bath to lower your body temperature.
Risk factors for heatstroke include overweight, age, low fitness level, underlying medical conditions, history of prior heatstroke, certain medications, and poor heat acclimatization.
Pay attention! The sooner heatstroke is tended to, the better. Notice tone of voice and react with care and quick action. Rapid, aggressive cooling is lifesaving.
