Food journals can give you insight into the types, amounts, and timings of your nutrient intake. You might be surprised what you discover about your dietary habits after logging your food and drink intake and taking a deeper look.
When filling out a food journal, it’s important to:
- Not change your normal eating habits! A food journal is meant to reflect your current eating habits so you can identify areas for improvement.
- Record ALL the foods and drinks you consume. And, be specific. Include details such as:
- Cooking method (fried, baked, grilled, etc.).
- Food and drink name brands.
- Instead of “egg sandwich,” write down what’s in the egg sandwich. For example, “2 scrambled eggs, 2 slices of whole-grain bread, and mayonnaise.”
- How much you consume in ounces, grams, cups, tablespoons, or servings. If you’re unsure, you can use your hand as a portion guide.
- Don’t forget to log your drinks!
